3/1/21: Mayo Clinic’s Perinatal Education Program is still here for you providing education and support during this unprecedented time with in-person classes, some virtual-interactive live classroom offerings on Zoom, and online eClass options. We are taking every precaution to ensure that the health and safety of our class participants and educators remain a top priority. New safety measures will be in place for in-person classes that include reduced class sizes, room arrangement that supports safe distancing, health screening of participants, and a requirement for everyone to wear a mask through the duration of the class. If you are currently registered for a class you will be contacted with further information. We will continue to offer the four eClasses available online if you choose not to take in-person classes: Understanding Birth, Understanding Breastfeeding, Understanding Infant and Child Safety, and Understanding Your Newborn.

Childbirth Preparation: Prenatal Weekend - Friday evening, Saturday daytime

Come and prepare for the birth of your baby! This class helps families prepare for labor, birth and early parenting. It is presented on a Friday/Saturday on the same weekend. Presentations, discussion, printed material, videos and hand on learning will help you understand the many aspects of preparing for your baby. The class is taught by experienced registered nurses. A tour of the Family Birth Center will be included.

Topics include:

  • Process of labor and birth
  • Comfort strategies (life skills - including relaxation and breathing)
  • Medical interventions and pain management options
  • Early postpartum care and adjustments
  • Newborn hospital procedures and health screenings
  • Newborn characteristics and basic cares

On Friday night the class runs from 6-9pm and the Saturday session runs from 9am-4pm.

It is recommended that you register early in your pregnancy for this class.  We suggest you complete the class about one month before your due date. At the very earliest we need you to be at least 24 weeks along at the start of class.

If you are planning to breastfeed we recommend the Breastfeeding and Pumping 101 class. For first time expectant parents we also recommend the Infant Passenger Safety class and Baby Care Basics class.

All registered participants will receive a confirmation email within one hour after registering (be sure to check your e-mail junk folder if you don't see the e-mail in your inbox). Please contact us immediately (phone: 507/266-7473 or email: if you do not receive an email.
